From Loss to Legacy: The Heartfelt Story Behind Gifted Illusionz
When I was a child, my grandmother always told me how gifted I was. She saw potential in me that I couldn’t yet understand, and she nurtured it by enrolling me in young and gifted programs in elementary school. Her belief in my abilities instilled a drive in me to always strive for more, knowing that my gifts would eventually reward me. My grandmother's unwavering support and encouragement shaped the foundation of who I am and what I aim to achieve.
A Life-Changing Loss
In 2017, my world changed forever. My grandmother passed away unexpectedly when I was just twenty-two. She had been my rock, my only parent, raising me from birth and guiding me through life. Her loss was a devastating blow, especially because I had hoped she would be there to witness my successes, meet my first child, and continue to share in my journey. The grief was overwhelming, but I knew I had to be strong for my three younger sisters and my family.
Growing up, my life wasn’t easy. My mom struggled with mental illness, and my dad was incarcerated for the early part of my life. It was my grandmother, my mom’s mother, who took on the role of my caregiver. She provided stability and love, ensuring that I had everything I needed to thrive. Even when my dad and I reconnected later in my adulthood, it was my grandmother’s unwavering presence that had the most profound impact on my upbringing.
As I sifted through memories, I realized I had very few photos of my grandmother. The absence of these captured moments was heartbreaking. All I had were her New York State ID and a few photos from her funeral. This painful realization sparked something within me. I didn’t want anyone else to experience the same regret of not having captured precious moments with their loved ones.
The Birth of Gifted Illusionz
The journey to creating Gifted Illusionz was not a straightforward path, but rather a winding road filled with passion, discovery, and a deep sense of purpose. Gifted Illusionz was born in December 2020. I did my first photoshoot in January 2021. This timeline marks a significant period in my life, coming three years after my grandmother’s passing. It was a time when I finally felt I had regained my footing. It was also the year I moved out of the house I had lived in with my grandmother all my life and into a new home for the first time.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I faced job losses and realized I needed something of my own, something that no one could take away from me. This realization, coupled with my love for photography, led to the birth of Gifted Illusionz. Carrying my camera everywhere became second nature. People would often remark, “He always has his camera with him,” and they were right. Photography was not just a hobby; it was an integral part of who I was.
Taking pictures wasn’t just about creating beautiful images, it was about preserving moments, telling stories, and connecting with people on a deeper level. This was more than a passion, it was my calling. I felt a profound sense of purpose whenever I looked through the lens, knowing I was capturing moments that would be cherished forever.
The name “Gifted Illusionz” was born from this realization. “Gifted” represents the potential and drive my grandmother always saw in me. It’s a nod to the programs she put me in and the constant encouragement to thrive and succeed. “Illusionz” speaks to the magical, almost surreal ability of photography to capture moments and make them timeless. It also represents the strength I found in creating a facade of positivity during my toughest times, a necessary illusion to cope with my grief and eventually turn it into my reality.
Starting Gifted Illusionz was a way to honor my grandmother’s legacy and the lessons she taught me. It was a commitment to live out her belief in my gifts and to use those gifts to create something meaningful. Every photograph I take is a tribute to her and the values she instilled in me.
